SCASA Honorees
SCASA Honorees

On March 13, 2015 North Haven Middle School had the privilege of honoring two of its 8th graders at the annual SCASA (South Central Area Superintendents Association) Awards banquet at Cascades’s in Wallingford. One boy and one girl are honored from the 8th grade. The SCASA Criteria for selection is based on community service and service to others; Academic prowess (relative to ability); and Leadership to the school community. Principal Philip Piazza and school counselor Karen Spencer were honored to accompany Hannah Fruin and William Ryan as the NHMS 8th grade SCASA award winners.

The following write ups for each student were placed in the awards program:

Hannah Fruin                                  Grade 8               North Haven Middle School

Hannah has been a member of our middle school sketchbook club, as well an active member of our Friends of North Haven Middle School club which works to spread kindness and a more positive culture throughout the building and community. Hannah is also a member of our Best Buddies club which is dedicated to building meaningful one-on-one friendships for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In the North Haven community, Hannah has worked at the local homeless shelters serving meals, helped her church with a toy collection drive for underprivileged children, and collected clothes and household items for local families in need. This summer Hannah will be pursuing the Red Cross Babysitting certification so she can start a babysitting service with her friends. For fun, Hannah enjoys playing softball, volleyball, hiking at Peter’s Rock, playing with her dog, Lucy, and hanging out with her friends and family. NHMS is proud of Hannah for this outstanding achievement.

William Ryan                                   Grade 8               North Haven Middle School

Over the course of his three years at North Haven Middle School, William Ryan has been a member of our Circle of Friends club, where students spend time playing games and building relationships with students with mental and physical handicaps. He has also been a part of our Future Problem Solvers since the 4th grade, working hard to solve the world’s problems in the years ahead. William has also played the trumpet in our band since the 4th grade. William has been a member of our middle school soccer team since the 6th grade, earning the distinction of co-captain as an 8th grader. He also plays hockey, lacrosse and tennis outside of school. William’s community service varies from helping with food preparation at the New Haven Soup Kitchen, to going on a mission trip to the village of San Joaquin in the Dominican Republic back in 2012 through an organization called Foundation for Peace.  While there, he and his family helped villagers install piping for a new, clean water system and built a new water tower to replace the existing corroded one.  He was also able to play with the children and got to know the people of the community of San Joaquin. NHMS is very proud of William for this recognition.
