According to the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers website,

MATHCOUNTS is a coaching and competition program that brings to math achievement the same enthusiasm and prestige now enjoyed by athletics. Students are called “mathletes” and are rewarded for winning competitions at the school, area, state and national levels.”

Led by 8th grade math teacher Anthony Benvenuto, NHMS has a robust MATHCOUNTS program and we’ve participated recently in two local competitions.

Our first competition was held at Yale on February 7th, and our NHMS MATHCOUNTS Team came in 10th in a field of some very strong local teams (notably Dodd Middle School in Cheshire, The Foote School and Hopkins in New Haven). Seventh grader Matt Wabunoha gave a very strong performance to come in 34th in the individual competition among all participants.

Our second competition was held at Foote School on March 7th, and our Mathletes had an even stronger showing. The team of Lucas Biran, Will McCleary, Matt Wabunoha and Tim Yang earned a second place finish, just behind Hopkins, and ahead of both Foote School and Hamden Hall! Lucas Biran scored the second highest individual score overall. Both Will McCleery and Lucas Biran qualified to participate in the exciting head-to-head "countdown round", a fast-paced oral competition in which two students compete against each other and the clock; in the countdown round matches, Will McCleery took first place and Lucas earned 3rd place.

Kevin Hlavaty, Janhavi Narain, Evan O’Connell, Carlo Frunzio, Laekhram Singh, and Spencer McCleery also did a fantastic job representing NHMS. It was a great season for Mr. Benvenuto’s MATHCOUNTS team and every North Haven Mathlete should be proud!
